The Section and Ci3 have developed an online toolkit to optimize the delivery of IUD Care. The website provides a set of tools that clinical staff, healthcare providers, and administrators can use to identify and address system-level barriers to uptake of the IUD by clinic patients. Dr. Gilliam joins the Research Advisory Board of Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation (BTWF), which was founded in 2011 to foster a more accepting society. The Research Advisory Board is made up of a group of scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds who will advise the Foundation, providing guidance based on sound theory and research.

The Section presented research at the National Forum on Family Planning in Denver, Colorado, examining the relationship between insurance type and IUD use among unmarried young women [PDF] and correlates of early versus late teen pregnancy [PDF].

The Section has been awarded a grant from the Office of Population Affairs to improve the systems and processes for intrauterine device delivery in Title X clinics in Chicago.

AUGUST 2010
Education
Over the summer, the Section worked closely with students from the University of Chicago Woodlawn Charter School and second-year medical students from the Pritzker School of Medicine participating in the Summer Service Partnership program. Team Woodlawn decided to focus their project on an important topic to promote sexual health among their peers – condom use. Based on their research, they created three videos.

JULY 2010

In July, Dr. Gilliam was interviewed on WBEZ Worldview with Dr. Oladosu Ojengbede from the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria, about their global health partnership to reduce maternal mortality and improve access to birth control (listen here). This partnership developed following Dr. Gilliam's participation in the documentary "The Edge of Joy" by filmmaker Dawn Sinclair Shapiro, which closely follows a cast of Nigerian doctors, nurses, midwives and religious leaders as they battle the second largest maternal mortality rate in the world.

Correlates of use of long-acting reversible methods of contraception among adolescent and young adult women
Published in Contraception, this study finds important differences between use of DMPA and the IUD, some of which may reflect provider biases regarding IUD provision.
