Birth Control

What are the different types of contraception?

There are a variety of different forms of contraception. Consult with your doctor to determine which works best for you.

  • Hormonal methods include the pill, the patch, the NuvaRing, DepoProvera, Implanon, and the Mirena IUD. These release hormones into your body that prevent ovulation.
  • Non-hormonal methods include barrier methods such as condoms and diaphragms that prevent the sperm from entering the uterus, as well as the Paragard IUD.

Will my birth control keep me from getting an STD?

While your birth control can prevent pregnancy, condoms are the only method of contraception that can protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

How do I get access to emergency contraception?

Emergency contraception (EC, or the morning-after pill) is now available over the counter, so you should be able to purchase it at your local drug store.

Will emergency contraception work if I am already pregnant?

No. EC is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy. It will not work if you are already pregnant. EC can be taken up to five days after unprotected sexual intercourse, but should be taken as soon as possible. EC is not effective as a routine method of contraception. Learn more about EC.
